In Old English literature, poets and writers are said to have a ‘word hoard’: a store of vocabulary that they can ‘unlock’ to create their work.

Flashcards are an easy and fun way for pupils to build their ‘Word Hoard’.

This word hoard takes the form of a selection of foldable cards. The PDF should be printed double sided, and you then cut the page into horizontally strips (cut width-ways), and fold so that the outsider sides show a word, and inside you get a definition.

These words are related to trade and travel. If you are interested in a word hoard on a specific theme, we can adapt them for you for a small fee.

You can find more words on Hana Videen’s Old English WordHord website.
